Determining Arguments

Directions: Watch the video (if you have trouble accessing the video from Blogger, go directly to YouTube address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSO_d1svtfU).

What is the main argument of the video? How does the introduction of the video support this argument? What about the main support (what types of main support are there?)? What would make the middle part more convincing, if you feel it does not effectively support the main argument? How does the conclusion of the video work to wrap up the whole argument?

Note: If you wish to comment on the video, please perform the assignment first, and then comment.

(You might think that listening to parts of this video is torturous, but push through).

Due before class on Thursday, September 18th.

  1. I think the main argument of this video is that sound is a powerful thing and it can have a negative impact. I didn’t really see the intro and conclusion as connecting to each other. The middle part could be improved with more dialogue perhaps. The support for the argument comes from the main character talking about his time spent in Guantanamo Bay. He talks about the heavy metal they played for two and a half days. It was not only the type of music or the fact that it was loud, but also that the corruption of sounds (overloading cheap speakers) can be painful too. The distortion is actually said to be more annoying than loudness. The beginning, middle, and ending did not tie in together well. I thought the video was confusing and not very coherent.

    1. I also found this video very confusing. I have watched it several times and I too feel that beginning, middle and ending did not tie together. That with the background sound effects didn't help me either.

    2. I think that if you look at the way simple sound could break down the clay after extended exposure it does tie in nicely to the break down it could have on your mind. Solid to a form of liquid just from sound - pretty strong argument to me.

  2. I believe the main argument is that through a combination of isolation and loud music it can affect the human body. The introduction supports the argument by using an example of what decibel levels the human ear can hear at. Through the video Broomberg and Chanarin use examples and personal experience conducted in form of interview to support the main argument. I also believe that the conclusion was wrapped up when they released Ruhal Amed and he began to explain how difficult it was to return to society after being isolated for as long as he had been.

    1. I could see how you would think that, but if you heard the guy say that he sat in a chair with hooks that he was being tortured through music and isolation. The main point is how people would hold detainees and use certain forms of torture and the torture they used was cheap speakers to make it so that disorientation was also a factor. So I politely disagree.

  3. I think the main argument for this video is about torture and how they use sound and cold to affect the ones being tortured. The beginning of the video shows a man talking and sound playing in the background and the story he is telling about his time in the torture chair. The main support is the story and the describing of the decibels and how you can’t listen to things to loudly cause it will have a impact on the brain and body. How using cheap speakers give off the distortion and how that makes a person unable to orient themselves. The conclusion supports that the video is about the methods of torture used on individuals, and when the man was set free he had to have time to reintroduce himself into society and how to walk without shackles.

  4. I think the main argument of this video is how loud sounds can affect your ears. The narrator talks about decibel levels, which are normal or abnormal. He uses this man in interview and experience to show proof of this. With the information the narrator has given with a man's experience was good to convince me. I feel that there could be more evidence to his argument and a lot less "sounds". In my point of view, this video left me confused. Less background effects would work better for me.

  5. I believe the main argument of the video is that sound can affect a person negatively if implemented in a certain way. In the introduction, a man gives specific information on what decibels can be harmful which, I believe, is the strongest point of the entire argument. There are two main supports: the man describing his personal experience with interrogation and sound torture and a knowledgeable person describing the science to sound and how a person reacts to it. I feel the middle of the video could have been stronger. The man tells a gripping story but I feel he could have focused more on how sound specifically affected him. The conclusion has the same problem, the man doesn't touch on the after affects of the sound torture at all.

  6. i think the main argument of the video is how sounds and the decibels of the sounds made can have an affect on a person in a controlled situation when isolated from everyone and everything else . The main support for this video is the research they do with the sounds as well as adding the cold which gets the negative reaction through his personal experience and using it in a torturous way. I honestly think that this video gave some kind of argument to what he was talking about ,but it could have gone more in depth of how the sound and cold affected the person after or how it all ties together . I felt like the video was kind of all over the place and the begining, middle, and end didn't really transition in one another very well .

    1. I think the argument was that sound could have an affect wherever you are. Not just that it was in a controlled situation when isolated. I think the isolation was part of the support for the main argument.

  8. The main argument for this video seems to be that sound can be damaging to your ears and can be used as an effective tool in torturing humans. In the first part of this video Cambridge University states that sound can be damaging to your ears if used for long periods over a certain decibel. I feel that the main argument is not supported, in that the man who was captive in Guantanamo Bay discussed the fact that isolation and the shackling of his legs were hard to overcome and he did not discuss the effects of the sound torture after he was released. Also, he was reciting the words to a song at the beginning of the video which leads me to think that the sound torture was not effective because he could pay attention to the words instead of the pain it may have inflicted. The conclusion showed that if you pour some water and corn starch on a speaker at a high decibel it will turn into a dinosaur and dance around (The best part of the video), which doesn’t seem to work well with supporting the main argument that sound is a good torturing device.

    1. You think this is a joke gunner? This guy was tortured in Guantanamo bay for over three years! The ending showed the physical effects sound can have on a object. Imagine if you were sitting in that room and your brain was the corn starch?! Just kidding i have no idea what im talking about. I found the video to be confusing with mixed emotions and incomplete thoughts/arguments.
UPDATE: Now that i think about it, the corn starch and water kinda does make sense in the context of the video. Because it shows the physical effects of sound on an object.

  9. I think the main argument of this video is that sound is a very beautiful thing but can be very damaging. The introduction stated that sound can be a painful when loudness and time mix together. The main support of this argument is a former prisoner at Guantanamo bay. As a torture device they would isolate him and blast distorted music for days at a time. They really didn’t go in depth on how this effected his hearing in which they should have mentioned. The conclusion does not support the main argument at all. They talked a bit about distortion and how it is worse than loudness. In which distortion can most likely damage someone's mental state.

    1. I believe the conclusion supports the main argument, by showing us the power of sound and how it could move an object around.

    2. Yeah, i kinda figured that out after i wrote it.

  10. I would say that sound is the main argument. The beginning describes the meaning of sound. One of the main supports is that sound can be used as an interrogation tool. The person telling the story could have talked about, how the sound affected him. The conclusion showed us, how strong sound is, by moving transforming an objects.

    2. I agree with how you are saying that sound can be used as "an interrogation tool." However I think the argument they were trying to get across in this video is how sound depending on how it is used can be harmful to the human body.

  11. The main argument in the video is that sound at certain decibels can have a negative effect on a person's mental state. It can effect your sanity basically and leave an impression that is hard to escape once exposed to this level of torture. The man's description of his experience was compelling. By him relating how the effects stayed with him and changed his perspective shows just how damaging these forms of torture can be. To be broken down on a level where your basic senses have become an "enemy" to you and change your every day life must be damaging to your confidence and self reflection as well. The examples of levels of sound were irritating through the 8 minutes of video feed and I can't imagine being exposed to these conditions for any length of time. The conclusion shows how the continuous exposure to this can break down solid forms of matter; think for a minute on how this would effect your brainwaves and thought process. Day to day, feeling the anxiety of loud noise, barking dogs, temperature....who wouldn't feel long term effects of that, especially relating it to a torturous time in your mind's memories. Shameful that we could take beautiful aspects of the world and turn them into scars people carry for life.
