The Subject of the video was to be the person you are not who others want you to be. It also pointed out that being smart is sexy and you should work hard and do what you love to do. The specific events was an award show that the recipient didn’t feel he fully deserved because he is just doing what he loves to do. Teens and young adults can relate to the speaker. His delivery to appeal to our emotions was felt through the video. The Pathos was very heartfelt and somewhat emotional to the speaker. The appealing from the Ethos point was that he had a great idea from the experiences he has lived through. He is very knowledgeable of his experiences, and what the rest of us should see through his eyes.
ReplyDeleteThe ethos was ineffective just because it’s through his experiences. The pathos worked better because the people who have lived through some things can relate better to him. It was important to his and you could feel his emotions. The video would be better if he used just the pathos, simply because people especially young ones can feel the emotions and maybe take something away from the speech.
I agree with most of everything you said about the video. However the part where you said that the speaker's appeals to ethos was ineffective, I would like to politely disagree. Being a well known and liked actor would make your own experiences credible information since you already have the trust built in your fans. Isn't appealing to ethos to determine or show ones credibility?
DeleteKris's subject in the video was a motivational message for the audience to be successful in their lives. I feel that Ashton chose this situation to deliver his message because the audience was young and he could inspire them in a time in their lives when they are making choices towards their future. The ethos of the video was created because the speaker is a well-known actor who is well liked by young audiences as proven by the fact that he delivered his message while receiving a teen choice award. The pathos of his message was shown numerous times in his emotional description of his personal experiences throughout his life which lead to the day he received his award.
ReplyDeleteS- The subject of the speech was opportunity and being successful
ReplyDeleteO-The occasion was the teen choice awards
A- The speakers intended audience most likely was teens, however his actual audience was everyone that attended or watched the teen choice awards
P- The purpose was to inform the younger audience what opportunity looks like and how to be successful.
S- Ashton Kutcher
Ethos- The speaker appealed to ethos by showing that he felt like a fraud by not using his first name, and by giving examples of his own life experiences. His appeals to ethos was effective because he is considered a credible source for the younger audience since he is a well known and liked actor among the younger generation.
Pathos- Ashton Kutcher appealed to pathos by showing that his younger audience values opportunity and being sexy. He uses some of his own life experiences to show that opportunity often looks like work and that being sexy is more than just about looks. His tone was excitement and passion. The speaker's appeal to pathos was effective when he used his own life experiences to show that by hard work, being smart ("sexy") that you can be successful and that there is more to life than most people think.
I don't think that the speech would have been as effective if the speaker only appealed to only one either ethos or pathos. I believe it was more effective due to the speaker appealing to both ethos and pathos.
I agree that it was effective because he used both ethos and pathos. One thing you said though I'm not sure is relevant to ethos, which was, "The speaker appealed to ethos by showing that he felt like a fraud by not using his first name." If that was part of ethos, wouldn't that do the opposite of showing his credibility, by saying "fraud?" I think maybe that would go into the emotional appeal, or pathos.
DeleteThe subject of the video was successfulness. The speaker was Ashton Kutcher. The occasion was the teen choice awards. The audience was kids in the audience and kids watching the program. The purpose was to inspire kids (or teens) to seek the important things in life. I thought Kutcher did an excellent job of showing ethos. Not only is he well known and successful, but he shared stories from his past that got him where is today. These stories provided evidence and inspiration. I can also see the pathos in this video. His three points, especially the second one, being smart is sexy, were emotional triggers for the audience. This speech is only effective because it uses both ethos and pathos. I don’t think you always need both, but in this case, ethos was a must for this kind of speech.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your pathos, the audience was triggered emotionally by the second point, being smart is sexy. Good observation.
DeleteS- Young people need to make a great life, not live a life given to them.
ReplyDeleteO- Speech at teen choice awards
A- Young people ages 14 to 23, Anyone looking for direction in life
P- The purpose was probably to inform young people that if they desire a great life they need to make it and not expect a great life to be thrust upon them.
S- Ashton Kutcher
Ethos- Aston Kutcher stated that he had multiple jobs in which were all opportunity's for him. His success was earned through hard work and passion.
Pathos- Aston Kutcher used very strong wording throughout his speech. He tried to motivate young people through passion. I couldn't really connect with anything he said in the speech but Aston Kutcher is successful in life so people have no choice but to listen to what he has to say about creating a good life. You could see and hear the passion being expressed in his speech.
I disagree with your statement that just because Kutcher has a good life people have to agree with him. It all comes down to what you want in life, and if you are biased one way or the other, that doesn't make it mandatory to listen to what he has to say. He delivers a message to follow dreams, and he is not just saying that because he is a star. Not all stars reach out to the youth like this and have this passion. Likewise, not everyone listen and relate simply because someone is a star.
DeleteS- The subject was about the things needed to build a life and not just live in it.
ReplyDeleteO- Occasion, acceptance speech at the Teen Choice Awards.
A- intended audience was the youth at the awards and the actual audience was anyone watching.
P- The purpose was to inspire the youth that you can build your life to be anyway you want it to be as long as you are willing to work for it. He mentions being "sexy" is being smart and thoughtful, and generous.
S- Ashton Kutcher
What makes the ethos and pathos effective is that he uses them in combination with each other. He lets them know right away that his real name is Chris. The ethos is coming out when he says that because he is saying he once was just a "normal" person of the world and worked several jobs and now is an established actor, which makes him very credible, and a good speaker for the subject. His pathos are effective because he used very strong wording in his speech, again he stated that being "sexy" is being smart. His tone was stern but not intimidating because it was very easy to relate. I feel both were very effective, lack of one without the other would not have made for a good speech about building a good life and not just living in one.
Hey, really good job but when Ashton gives his real name to the audience, doesn't it evoke an emotional reaction out of you. I would say that it makes you feel a connection to him. This can work for both ethos and pathos but I feel Ashton's purpose was more pathos.
DeleteS- Young people’s future
ReplyDelete0cassion- Teen Choice Awards- Acceptance Speech
Audience- teenage fans and viewers
Purpose- to help guide young people’s decision towards right path
Speaker- Ashton (Chris) Kutcher
Ethos- When he says that he is accepting a grandpa award, it makes you view him as older and wiser. When he says he is giving insider secrets it makes the information seem more important. When he talks about all his different jobs it makes you think of him as a hard worker and a reliable person, someone you can trust.
Pathos- When he starts out saying that he wouldn’t have a career without his audience it makes them feel connected to him. When he tells his audience he feels like a fraud and then reveals his real name it again connects with the audience. When he tells the audience his second point is being sexy it is kind of provocative. He describes all his jobs forcefully, and rhythmically forcing the audience to build up in excitement.
What makes his ethos/pathos effective is that fact that he giving this speech during an acceptance speech where most would probably give a short simple or funny speech. He goes there and it really shows he is passionate about what he is saying. He gives his ethos pretty much in the beginning, giving the audience someone they can trust, meanwhile building up pathos by connecting and getting the audience pumped up when he recites his jobs. Then he gives the message he wanted to get across. I think a perfect argument.
What makes his ethos/pathos ineffective? This is kind of hard but if I had to pick I would say maybe a little overkill with pathos. He was very aggressive but it was an award show, it’s a high energy event.
Would it be as effective if the speaker used only ethos or pathos? I think it would be less effective but overall with the giving audience I think he could have told them the world is flat they’d agree.
s- You have to work hard to be successful
ReplyDeleteo- teen choice awards
a- The teens present at the awards was the intended audience the actual audience was all the viewers watching.
p- to work hard to make your life what you want it to be.
s- Ashton Kutcher
Ethos- "Chris" Ashton Kutcher relates to the audience and appeals to ethos by saying he was "normal" before he became a star. He makes references to himself working multiple regular jobs and doing normal things in life that everyone does making him a credible speaker.
Pathos- Ashton Makes an emotional appeal to his audience saying that they are a key part of his success. He also appeals to pathos by urging the audience that they can aspire to anything they want to be if they work hard.
I believe he did use pathos and ethos effectively and the argument was stronger since he used both.
S - How to create your own success and build your own life
ReplyDeleteO - Teen Choice Awards
A - Youth, teens who may question what life has in store for them
P - encourage youth to create their own lives, recognize opportunities and work hard to make their desired successes realities
Kutcher uses ethos to have the audience relate to the fact that he was once a normal guy that worked common jobs as stepping stones to reach his success. He was viewed as a knowledgeable speaker when he gave the audience information that showed his experience compared to current successes. He also uses pathos in understanding that they may have those who influence attempt to influence their lives, but should choose to live for their own lives rather than one built for them. He is very passionate, encouraging and inspirational to his audience. I feel that the use of both pathos and ethos is very effective in delivering his message, and it would not have reached his audience as well without both. As far as being ineffective, I don't feel that it was considering his intended audience. I believe the youth of today want to hear that it is fine to follow your own path in life, to "build your own life, don't just live one." They want that excitement, passion and enjoyment out of life. Bringing the idea of being sexy as being "thoughtful, smart, and generous" relieves the social stigma that it is all about appearance....it is about how you live your life and the person you choose to be in that lifetime. He delivers that message very well.

ReplyDeleteS- The subject was working hard and building a life.
ReplyDeleteO- The occasion was the teen choice award. Also Ashton Kutcher receiving an award.
A- The audience are we the students, the people who attended the teen choice award and those who watched from home.
P- The purpose was to reward Ashton Kutcher and hear him give a speech.
S- Ashton was also the speaker.
• Ethos- The ethos was that he is a well-known actor across the country.
• Pathos- The pathos was Ashton thanking the audience, by saying he would not be here if it were not for them. His speech about opportunity and being sexy was very passionate.
• The ethos and pathos was effective because Ashton is a well-liked actor from movies and TV shows. In addition, his speech was very passionate, because most people can relate to it.
• Only having ethos or pathos would take away from the speech and it would not be as strong.
While your points are correct, I disagree with you pathos statement. I think that the pathos was that Ashton was trying to show them that they needed to make their own decisions. They shouldn't let others plan their life for them. Also because he is such a well known actor his speech was very passionate which and inspire the audiences.
DeleteS- The subject was you need to build your life not just live it the way others want you to. Also to create your success.
ReplyDeleteO- The occasion was at the Teen Choice Awards where Ashton Kutcher received the award.
A- The audience are youth/teens and adults who question their lively hood.
P- The purpose was having Ashton receive an award and also to give a speech.
S- Chris Ashton Kutcher
Ethos- Ashton uses ethos to tell the audience that he was a "normal" guy before he became famous. He used examples of him finding work.
Pathos- he demonstrates pathos by helping the audience to understand that there will be times when they are influenced. But he tells them that they need to learn to live their lives the way they want and not let anyone else build it for them.
- without Pathos and Ethos in this speech Kutcher would not have been able to get his point across and have a well-known actor give this speech made it even more believable and relatable.
- Also without Pathos and Ethos this speech would not have reached as many viewers or people who could possible relate.
