Directions: Read your diagnostic. Beyond the notable difference in your writing ability, look at the goal you set for yourself. For this blog, write about 100-200 words to start off what will (during the next class session) become your Final. Discuss the goal you set for yourself at the beginning of class, and then detail (briefly) how/why you did or did not achieve that goal. This could become your thesis statement/introduction. IF you did not achieve your initial class goal, did you adopt a new goal as the class progressed? Did you accomplish the new goal? Why or why not?
Due before 10pm on December 9th. (We will begin--and hopefully finish--writing this blog in class.)

A goal that I set for myself when I started ENG 121 was to be able to write a college level paper at a B grade level. Writing at this level has never been a strong suit of mine, it is hard at times for me to get my thoughts into paper form. At this time I have not gotten to my goal but I have been steadily approaching my goal, getting better and better with each paper that gets completed. I still have the same goal for the class, although I have not gotten a B yet on a paper, I am hoping with the synthesis and the final I will accomplish my goal set.
ReplyDeleteThe goal I set for myself in this class was to get an A but I will settle for a B. I know I am well on my way to obtaining that goal. I have struggled with some writing assignments, but my persistence and dedication are paying off. I feel that my writing has improved, and I feel very comfortable now with defining a thesis statement. I achieved this goal by asking for additional help from the professor and the writing center. The feedback from the class peers during the peer review has helped me feel confident in the process. I feel that I have succeeded my goal in this class and I am taking away valuable information to further my education. I am confident that I can now read and reread a paper and understand what I am reading and my comprehension has also improved because of this. I was confused at the beginning and not knowing what to expect of the class, made it a little hard at first. Going forward I am more comfortable with English or other classes with my comprehension and writing.
ReplyDeleteThe goal I set for myself was to get a better understanding of the critical thinking process, and how to apply it to writing a college level paper. Throughout this semester I have learned that I already had an understanding of how to use critical thinking to write a paper, however I lacked self-confidence to realize the skills that I already held. Even though I have been successful in writing essay I have also learned that there are some things that I need to improve on in the writing process.
ReplyDeleteI never set a concrete goal at the beginning of the class other than I want to pass and enjoy the class. I haven't passed yet since we haven't yet taken our exam, but I did enjoy this class and I feel like I've learned a lot. I feel like my papers have become a lot stronger and I've really learned how to write well informed papers by using critical thinking and reasoning. my research has become a lot stronger and I feel like finding good evidence for my papers will be a lot easier going forward, therefore making my papers stronger.
ReplyDeleteOn my first day of classes, I found myself in a both foreign and familiar atmosphere. The initial experience was terrifying to a degree for me. I lacked confidence in my knowledge, this I justified by the lack of education I’d obtained over the past decade of my life. I doubted my ability to succeed, let alone I had the ability to write decent college level papers. However, as the semester progressed, through the papers I wrote and the discussions I took part in, I learned that being in environment of higher academia was somewhere I should’ve been a long time ago. This semester I achieved confidence in my own intelligence that I did not have before. I unlocked abilities I didn’t know I had, and that I was much more of an affluent writer that I thought. I just need to turn my work in on-time.

ReplyDeleteThe goal I set for myself at the beginning of the semester was to gain a better understanding and feel for writing. Little did I realize at the time how vague that goal was. Throughout the semester I learned many things are involved in writing "good" paper. Perhaps the most valuable thing I learned was listening to others and gaining an outside perspective. I found that when I would start on a project I would get so involved into the subject that sometimes I would overlook obvious logical fallacies
ReplyDeleteor material unrelated to my topic. However, whenever I had a peer review or gave my paper to a family member to read, I always found that a fresh perspective would reveal something I needed to adjust. I believe I did accomplish my goal for this class. Using the input of peers I learned to how to write an improved paper.
Unfortunately, I did not turn a diagnostic blog in. I was slacking back when we first started, but I remember, at that time, I wanted to develop my writing and researching skills because I knew that that would be my most vital tool throughout college. I feel like I have definitely surpassed my goal. I feel confident in my researching abilities and developing my own ideas based on that research. I’ve learned this through trial and error, (probably more error than desired) but I’m happy I learned from my errors now and not later down the road when it would be more important. Not that your class isn’t important Ms.B ;) Another thing I have developed is my time management skills and my attention to detail. Me, missing my first assignment is case in point. Now I start my process far out in advance because, through trial and error, I’ve learned how fast time passes and how quickly you can fall behind and start playing catch up. My quality of work is never what it should be whenever that happens.
ReplyDeleteThe goal I set for myself this semester was to be able to write a proper academic paper and to also be able to write a paper longer than a hundred words. I was able to achieve this goal by reading out of my Little Brown Handbook and Inquiry book. I learned how to properly set up an academic paper by coming up with a thesis, using topic sentences and evidence. This is material I have never used in the past while or never truly understood. I will hopefully never forget how to use these concepts in the future. My visits to the writing and Learning Assistance Centers were very beneficial, due to all the constructive criticism and help I received. The one on ones I had with my professor and all the example sheets, helped me understand the meaning of writing a true academic paper.
ReplyDeleteThe goal I set for myself this semester was to expand my vocabulary and learn more study and writing skills that would improve my papers. I achieved this goal almost to as much as I had hoped. During the semester in every class I took, I wrote down each word I didn't know and I looked up the definition to it that evening. By doing this, I not only improved my vocabulary skills but also my use of word choices in my papers. I would incorporate the words I did not know in my papers, which help me to write better college worthy papers. My second goal was learning new skill. I believe I learned new writing skills that would help me out, but it wasn't quite as many as I had hoped. I learned how to proper start writing a thesis sentence. First, by starting with an academic question that later turns into the thesis sentence. Second, the Little Brown Handbook came in very handy at times to find the proper formatting of the papers, and I learned new tricks and ways to set up a works cited page properly. I learned how the authors names always had to be in alphabetical order, and how the second lines are indented. With these, new experiences I had in this class my papers from now on will be way better, hopefully.
ReplyDeleteI set out to obtain a "B" Grade or better in the class. My plan was to attend every class, turn in all assignments, and participate in class. I started off the semester great by attending almost every class! I think i participated in group activity's well. But by the end of the semester I started to slack off and miss some classes. This reflected my grade because i failed to turn in some assignments. All the important things i turned in including the essays. I was getting alright grades on my essays so for a while i had a "B" grade. Depending on this essay we just turned in I may or may not end up with a "B" grade. So only time will tell if i truly achieved my goal.
