Discovering Topics

Directions: In order to determine your topic for your research synthesis, you must first begin to test what you want to say, what you want to say and who you want to say it to. First, read LBH 14-16 and answer 1.5--LBH p.17--to create an academic question. Perform exercise 2.5 on p. 35 to create your topic.

Initial reply due before class on Thursday, November 13th.

Reply to classmate: ask a question that will provoke your classmate to think more deeply about his or her topic. For instance, if the topic is too broad, ask a question that will encourage your classmate to think about one specific area of the topic. If the topic is too narrow, ask a question that will encourage your classmate to think more deeply about the issue, which will widen his/her scope.

Due before 5pm on Friday, November 14th.

  1. The topic I chose for my synthesis paper is radiology. The academic question I have came up with was: Is radiology a legitimate career field to major in?

    1. Radiology is an important science. Are you perhaps meaning to ask, Is radiology a good career plan? Or, Is a career in radiology today an attainable career? Or, how difficult is it to get a job in radiology? Just some ideas...

  4. I've been doing a lot of personal research on steroids and their side effects. This is a highly controversial issue with both sides of the argument having strong beliefs in their stance. My academic question is "should steroids be viewed as an achievement in human development or a detriment to our society?"

  5. I've been playing a lot of Call of Duty: Advanced warfare lately. I have slowly realized that Advanced Warfare is just like the Call of Duty before that and like the Call of Duty before that one etc. My academic question is "Why do gamers buy Call of Duty every year even though they know it will basically be the same game every year?

  7. Most people believe we went to the moon. Several years ago I started examining the “other side” of the argument. I found that there was actually a lot more to it than I had original believed. My topic is the moon landing. My academic question is: Is the existing evidence that we did not go to moon credible and valid?
